Shopping

If you are visiting Singapore this holiday season you will most definitely want to see Orchard Rd. From gorgeous Christmas trees, to fab decorations, carol singers in the shortest shorts and of course the food stalls!

Its no secret that the locals two favourite pastimes are shopping and eating!

For the newcomer deciding where to shop it’s easy, if you have endless amounts of cash to spare and are chasing the big designer names, then its Orchard all the way!

If you want something a bit more edgy, or on a budget then try Bugis markets or Chinatown.

Can’t make it to Singapore, the crowds too much, or Christmas in the tropics just doesn’t do it for you? then there’s another option,

What about something pre-loved? why not check out ‘my robe’ Everything is in excellent condition and you might just find that special ‘stand out from the crowd’ piece.

Vintage & pre-loved is just starting to take off in a big way among young and hip Singaporeans, who are tired of the mall look. If you are already ‘on board’ you know how exciting it is to find that one ‘must have’ piece. Something a bit different, you know you ‘best friend’ won’t be wearing.

Check out ‘my robe’ you might find what you are looking for right here, and without breaking the bank!

This holiday season it’s all about girly retro glamour. Luxe lace dresses, sexy fitted & frilly that will give you the edge and style that you need to celebrate the holidays.

Jaffa’s Robe’ is Offering a purrfectly friendly service with an eclectic mix of reasonably priced, re-cycled & vintage clothing that’s been honestly described & will be promptly delivered.

Now about the Food, cause a girls gotta eat, right!

Hawker Centres & Food Courts in Singapore

One of the best things about living in Singapore is undoubtedly the food.

Hawker Centres and food courts are where most Singaporeans like to eat out. Food courts are usually found in shopping malls, are air-conditioned so a bit more pricy then your local Hawker Centre and not as much fun as sitting outside with the locals and experiencing a little piece of ’old world’ culture.

While your there lookout for some of my fellow felines lurking about in the shadows, hoping you will drop some delicious little morsel their way!

Some Singapore delicacies to try include String Ray, Chicken & Prawn Satay, Chicken Tikka, Roti Prata, Chicken Masala, Fried Kway Tiao (fried black noodles- normally served with cockles), Laska (chilli soup also served with cockles and Noodles) Hokkien Noodles, Hainanese Chicken Rice (yes, there’s lots of chicken!) There’s also black chicken, but I’ve yet to try that!

Local desserts like Ice Kachang (flavoured ice with red bean and jelly), Chendol (coconut based dessert), Grass Jelly (a black jelly) Tao Suan (bean in sticky paste, topped by fried dough).

My favourite food is Seafood of course! and you can’t forget the famous Chilli Crab, yum…………

Ready to shop, step into my robe…………and Thanks for visiting!

KINOKAWA, Japan — In times of need, Japanese say they can even ask the cat for help. In this town in western Japan, people look to Tama, a nine-year-old cat working as master of an unmanned train station.

The tortoiseshell coloured creature, born and raised at Kishi Station on the provincial Kishigawa Line, wears a formal uniform cap of Wakayama Electric Railway and calmly watches passing passengers who greet her.

There are 10 train stations on the 14.3-kilometre (8.9-mile) line.

“Tama is the only stationmaster as we have to reduce personnel costs. You say you could ask for the cat’s help, but she is actually bringing luck to us,” Wakayama Electric spokeswoman Keiko Yamaki said.

The company feeds her in lieu of salary.

Tama was born from a stray cat brought to the station by a cleaner and kept by Toshiko Koyama, a local who runs a grocery store next door.

The station went unmanned in April 2006 as the line was losing money. But Tama stuck around.

She rose to national stardom in January 2007 as the railway company formally appointed her as “stationmaster”.

Her appointment had an immediately positive effect, boosting the number of passengers using the line in January by 17 percent from a year earlier.

For the year to March 2007, the number of passengers rose to 2.1 million, up 10 percent from the previous 12 months, according to Yamaki.

Happy with her successful job as stationmaster, the company promoted Tama to “super-stationmaster” in January this year, making her “the only female in a managerial position” in the company’s 36-strong workforce.

“She now holds the fifth highest position in the company,” Yamaki joked.

In reward for the promotion, Tama got a new “office”.

The stationmaster’s office, a renovated former ticket booth at the station, opened in April with the attendance of Kinokawa Mayor Shinji Nakamura and Wakayama Electric president Mitsunobu Kojima.

The office guarantees her some privacy.

“She declines to relieve herself when passengers are looking. We set the toilet where passengers can’t see,” Yamaki said.

Those who want to greet her must be careful so as not to miss her.

“She works nine to five and takes Sundays off,” Yamaki said.

Tama commutes with Koyama, the grocery store operator, from a shed next to the station. As Koyama tells her, “Ms Stationmaster, it’s time to work,” Tama comes along to the station, Yamaki said.

The stationmaster is set to appear in a French documentary film, being directed by Myriam Tonelotto, about wonder cats from around the world.

Some time ago I awoke from an enchanted sleep only to find I had been transported from my world of upside down lands full of sunshine and open plains to this land of endless summer where it’s never cold but always rains.

Singapore’s history dates back to the 14th century, when the island was part of the Sri Vijayan Empire.

The legend of how Singapore came by its name is a Sri Vijayan Prince called Sang Nila Utam on arriving on the shores saw this animal which was most likely a tiger but he mistook for a lion, so named the place Singapura which is the Malay word for Lion, so LION CITY.

In 1819 a British civil servant, Sir Stamford Raffles established the city as a trading station for the British Empire. To this day we have Raffles Quay, Raffles Place, No 1 Raffles, Raffles Exchange and of course the infamous Raffles Hotel.

In 1959 Singapore joined the Malaysian Federation before achieving Independence as a Republic on August 9th 1965. Singapore is a carefully planned and well maintained city, where amid the hustle & bustle there are hundreds of green spaces and even a large area of untouched rainforest.

Primarily Chinese, Malays and Indians. This multi-racial element has resulted in a unique Singaporean idenity and a country that boasts four official languages: English or as we like to say Singlish, Tamil, Chinese and Malay. Singapore’s has a unique mix of bustling modernity coupled with a very strong Cultural Heritage.

Singapore’s mainland is 42km East to West and 23km North to South, and home to 4 million people. There is constant reclamation of land from the sea, and government drives to increase the population.

Singapore’s major industries were once rubber milling and tin smelting. The modern industrialization of Singapore began in 1961, Large-scale foreign manufacturing operations commenced in 1967 with the establishment of plants by several major multinational electronics corporations. The emphasis was on upgrading facilities to attract high-technology and skill-intensive industries.

Singapore even before the 1960s had of one of the most developed economic infrastructures in Southeast Asia, as well as a skilled, disciplined, and highly motivated work force. Major industries include electronics, financial services, oil drilling equipment, petroleum refining, rubber processing and rubber products, processed food and beverages, ship repair, and biotechnology.

Over the years a large Expatriate community has continuted to grown, many come from Europe, USA, Australia and other parts of Asia. They are mostly working in Investment Banking, Foreign Exchange, Shipping, Manufacturing, Property Development and IT.

Strolling around this city today, it seems like Singapore is in a constant state of renewal. Migrant workers from Bangladesh labour daily in the oppressive tropical heat to build yet another MRT (underground railway)station, high rise apartment or Shopping Mall.

Other migrant workers in Singapore include young women from the Philippines, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, employed as ‘Domestic Helpers’. Working for local families, many for whom life would come to a stand still without them. They are the nannies, maids, and cleaners. Filipinos are usually preferred by the ‘Expats’ because they have a good grasp of the English language, while local Indian families often favour Sri Lankan help, being culturally closer to them. There are as many Chinese from Mainland China working in the service industries, ie Restaurants, Hotels and Massage Parlours, and Malaysians who commute each day from Johor just across the border.

My name is Jaffa, I’m a fat Persian cat, I live with my Mistress in a Singapore flat. I sleep all day long on my rug in the ‘robe, but its getting so full its about to explode!

We all live together, my White Witch and me, her male companion which makes us three.
His favourite artist is Hieronymus Bosch which makes me think hes a magician of sorts. He plays some funny long thing, with keys and a mic, I prefer when its quite. I imagine him at work spinning his spiel with his wand in his hand and the dog by his heel. He likes swimming and blackjack, they both love to sail, while I lay on my back with my head to my tail.

My White Witch is a funny lady I think, She just loves to shop and likes the odd drink, she thinks about life, about love, about people she knows, about health about wealth and above all about clothes. she always has visitors coming to stay, most are quite jolly and some of them gay. She entertains them all by using her spells with all of her talent as the ’Domestic Goddess from Hell’ She takes them sight seeing and some shopping too, then they all go out dancing by the light of the moon.

Meanwhile, I sleep on my rug in the ‘robe, but its getting so full its about to explode!

With the holidays on the way its time to make space, put these clothes on your bod and a smile on your face.
Check out these gorgeous dresses, mostly black and some blue, there’s red, and there’s green, and purple velvet too. There’s shoes and there’s bags which all mix & match, all you’ve got to do is go get some cash.

The Singapore heat makes some pieces too hot to wear, but now you can buy them for a price that’s quite fair. I’ll pack them up safely and tell you the weight, I’ll post them to you but you must pay freight.

My Witch adores me and her man too, she especially loves clothes and most definitely shoes. They’re all wrapped in plastic, yuk I hate that stuff. Some are in paper but I’m finding it tough, to sleep in the robe so I’ve taken them out, I’ve washed them and ironed them and now there’s no doubt, that I’ve check them for flaws for rips tears and stains, so only the best of her wardrobe remains. Now that you know that I’ve checked them all out, I’m sure not a cat hair will surprise you and spring out, but if it does to be sure that will be good luck for you to be sure to be sure to be sure.

My White Witch dreams of setting up shop, selling new stuff and old stuff some retro some hot, with vintage a theme as she has lots of that, if we get it together we’d love your feedback:)

Meow…….Each month, 10% of all nett profits from these Fashion items will go to help feed my less fortunate brothers and sisters living in the back streets and Alleyways of Singapore.
